I am reading the Psalms quite a bit these days, and keep finding these anchors for the mind in a days work. Here are a couple of favourites from lately, and of course there are lots more:
Ps. 87:7 Addressed to God our creator: "All my springs are in you." There's the double meaning of springs as in the bounce in your dance, and also in terms of new life after winter. Love it. We were dancing to Marty Robbins in our kitchen Friday night....
Ps. 103 starts out, "Praise the Lord, O my soul" and then to the soul the psalmist says in verse 5: "Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, Making thee young and lusty as an eagle." I love that translation, and could only find it in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Other translations I consulted (KJV and New English) leave out the beautiful reference to holy desire imaged in eagles. Too risky?
And finally, for more on the holy erotic, try Ps. 85:10, "Mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other."
I know there's lots more in the Bible to get the blood flowing erotically. I haven't even got to Song of Solomon yet. But these are a start.
Finally, if you haven't already, please go to youtube.com and search "Paul Potts". He won a talent competition recently in Britain. You'll notice the judges are dubious when he comes out and says he wants to sing opera, after all he isn't glamourous and his job is selling cellphones. And then, praise God, they are palpably blown away. Try not to cry. I hope the trappings of success don't sink him, for this story is so far genuinely inspirational.
